Changing Your Site with Block Editor
WordPress makes it easy to customize your site’s appearance with its Block Editor. Let’s go over the Block Editor features that are available when in Design Mode.
How to Access Block Editor
To access your site’s editor feature:
- Log in to access the admin side of your website.
- Look to the left-hand Navigation Sidebar.
- Click on Appearances.
- Choose Editor.
Using WordPress’s Block Editor
When you first enter the Block Editor, you’ll see two main fields:
- The Website: this is what your website will look like when it is live. You can click on the sections here and adjust things manually. (This is called block editing.)
- The Sidebar: this is where you can access things like typography and pages.
Note: The Sidebar will go away when you click on a block inside of the “website” part of the Editor. Click the WordPress logo in the upper left-hand corner once, and it’ll come back.
The Block Editor Sidebar
The Sidebar has several options. These include:
Navigation is where you adjust what pages are available for your visitors to access from the homepage (or other pages, depending on your theme).
Styles lets you change the text’s font, colors, and spacing.
Pages is one way to edit the actual content on the site. You can type whatever you want, adjust the sizing, fonts, and colors. You can add in pictures, videos, quotes, quizzes, contact forms. Basically, anything you want to add to your website can be inserted through this editing feature.
Templates is where you adjust the layout of pages. This is great for pages you might not originally think to customize, like what your site looks like when someone conducts a search or what displays on a 404 error page.
Patterns let you create your own block. This lets you use the same layout on multiple pages without manually creating it more than once. Plus, you can edit it from here so that it changes site-wide.
