NJ Business Registration Certificate, Explained

If you’re a contractor or a subcontractor in New Jersey, you probably need a Business Registration Certificate. Here’s what to know:

What is a NJ Business Registration Certificate?

A New Jersey Business Registration Certificate is a document issued by the New Jersey Treasury Department’s Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services (DORES). While all companies doing businesses in New Jersey are required to register with the NJ Department of Treasury, not all New Jersey businesses need a business registration certificate.

Why do I need a NJ Business Registration Certificate?

In New Jersey, any business organization or individual who contracts with the public sector or with the casino service industry must have a business registration certificate. The certificate simply provides proof of valid business registration with the New Jersey Division of Revenue, which tells your employer you’re good to start working in the state.

When do I get a Business Registration Certificate?

You’ll probably be informed by your contracting agency when you’ll need a business registration certificate, because the certificate will be required before you can enter into a contract. According to the Business Registration of Public Contractors FAQ, such contracting agencies include, but are not limited to:

  • State, county, or municipal governments
  • Public education institutions
  • The casino service industry
  • Private firms that contract with public entities adhering to the state’s “public-private partnership” laws

How do I get a NJ Business Registration Certificate?

You can get a business registration certificate for free using New Jersey’s On-Line Business Registration Certificate Service. Or, you may call the Division of Revenue at 609-292-1730 and select option 3. This certificate is free, and you’ll only have to register for it once—although, you will have to update your registration if your contact and/or tax-eligibility information ever changes.

If your business is not registered with the state of New Jersey, you will have to complete Form NJ-REG. (Individuals and unincorporated construction contractors should use Form NJ-REG-A.) When registering for the first time via NJ-REG or NJ-REG-A, be sure to select “yes” for the contractor/subcontractor line (Online – Item 17; Paper Form – Item 18).
