How to Get a Business License in Montana

How to Get a Business License in Montana

After forming your business in Montana, there’s a good chance you’ll need to obtain a business license to legally operate in Big Sky Country. Here’s how:

What is a Montana business license?

Montana issues business licenses at the state level, as well as the local level:

  • State-issued business licenses are only issued to businesses that serve certain regulated professions, ranging from medicine to cosmetology. To see if your line of work requires a state license, use the Montana License Lookup to search for your industry. Once you find it, look to the right and you’ll see the state agency you’ll need to contact to get your license.
  • Local business licenses are issued by city or county offices in most jurisdictions. They can serve a number of different purposes, so it’s best to reach out to your local government office for more specific information.

Why do I need a Montana business license?

On the local level, business licenses are required in certain jurisdictions that collect local sales taxes (like Big Sky, Red Lodge and West Yellowstone), as well as for certain industries and services. For example, according to Bozeman’s Business License Brochure, if you own a business in Bozeman, MT you are required to fill-out a Business License Application “if you are a money-making enterprise.” (So, basically, if you own a business—though there are some exceptions.) Plus, you’ll need to submit an additional business license application to work in the following areas:

  • Mobile vending
  • Downtown mobile vending
  • Medical marijuana
  • Short term rentals

But Bozeman is just one example. Each city and/or county will have its own requirements and regulations when it comes to issuing business licenses.
