Do I need to register my non profit as a charity in NH?
Basically yes. You will need to register if:
- You have applied or are planning on applying for 501c3 tax exempt status from the IRS.
- You are formed for any of the following purposes: benevolent, patriotic, philanthropic, humane, scientific, educational, civic, environmental conservation, or public health.
- If your non profit is formed for another charitable purpose or includes any person who employs charitable appeal as a means of collecting contributions.
- If the primary purpose of your NH non profit is charitable in nature.
How do I register with the Charitable Trusts Unit?
You will fill out and submit a Register of Charitable Trusts Application for Registration form. There are very detailed instructions inside of the document provided by the state of New Hampshire.

Will I need to submit an annual report?
Yes. There is an official annual report form through the Charitable Trusts Unit. The annual filing fee for this is $75. There are also detailed instructions provided in this form.
Where do I send my annual report?
To the same address where you send your application.
What happens after I submit my application?
Once your non profit is registered, you will receive a Certificate of Registration. This will be signed by the Assistant Director of Charitable Trusts. You will also receive a cover letter telling you when your first annual financial report will be due. You will be mailed a reminder every year.
