Do I have to register my non profit charity with the New York Attorney General?
If your non profit is involved in charitable activities in New York State and plans to seek contributions, you are required to register with the Attorney General, Charities Bureau, whether or not it is exempt from tax. Religious organizations don’t have to register.

What needs filed to register with the Charities Bureau?
A charitable non profit must submit the following documents:
- Form CHAR410 (Registration Statement).
- A copy of the organization’s certificate of incorporation.
- A copy of the organization’s by-laws.
- A copy of organizations tax-exempt application, IRS forms 1023. (If applied for)
- If the organization has received tax exempt status, a copy of the determination letter from the IRS.
- $25 registration fee.
How long does it take to process a New York State charity registration?
It can take three weeks for your non profit to appear on NY Charity Registry.
Are there annual reporting requirements for charities in New York State?
Yes, registered charitable organizations will need to file annually the Charities Bureau form CHAR500. If your NY Charity has annual revenue more than $25,000, attach your current IRS form 990.
This annual financial statement is due by the 15th day of the fifth month after the close of the fiscal year, so generally, May 15th.
What is the annual filing fee for Form CHAR500?
It varies; for end of year net worth of $25,000 the fee is $25. End of year net worth of 50 million the annual fee is $1500. It is explained on the form.
Do professional fundraisers in New York have to register also?
All fundraisers employed by your NY non profit must file with the whopping fee, Form CHAR013 (Professional Fund Raiser Registration Statement) before they start requesting contributions. By their registration anniversary each year they are required to file Form CHAR015 Annual Bond with the $800 annual registration fee.
