Do I have to register my non-profit as a charity in New Jersey?
Yes, if your nonprofit organization collects more than $10,000 annually, you will need to register as a charity in New Jersey.
How do I register a charity in New Jersey?
Complete CRI-200 Short Form if your charity is newly formed or raised less than $25,000 the previous year. If your charity raised more than $25,000 the previous year, you’ll need to file CRI-1501 Long Form. In either case, to the forms you’ll need to attach the following:
- A copy of the New Jersey nonprofit’s bylaws.
- A copy of the nonprofit’s articles of incorporation.
- IRS determination letter, if applicable.
- Most recent IRS filing (if you haven’t yet filed, you can explain in a cover letter).
How much does it cost to register a charity in New Jersey?
In New Jersey, charity registration fees vary based on how much the charity raises, as follows:
- Raising between $0 and $25,000 = $30
- Raising between $25,001 and $100,000 = $60
- Raising between $100,001 & $500,000 = $150
- Raising more than $500,000 = $250
Do New Jersey charities have annual renewals?
Yes. To renew:
If your non-profit corporation raised less than $25,000 in donations in a year, file the CRI-200 Short Form with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Division of Consumer Affairs. Attach a copy of your IRS return to the form.
If your non-profit corporation raised more than $25,000 in donations in a year, file the CRI-1501 Long Form with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Division of Consumer Affairs. Attach a copy of your IRS return to the form.
Are there annual renewal fees?
Yes. The fees are the same as the initial registration fees:
- Raising between $0 and $25,000 = $30
- Raising between $25,001 and $100,000 = $60
- Raising between $100,001 & $500,000 = $150
- Raising more than $500,000 = $250
When are NJ charity renewals due?
Six months after the end of the charity’s fiscal year. Typically, June 1.
Are there any New Jersey charities that don’t have to register?
Yes, New Jersey does allow some exemptions to charity registration. They are as follows:
- Religious organizations.
- Educational institutions.
- Charities that receive less than $10,000 in contributions annually.
